Company

SaddleCo is a new setup based in California. Founded in 2002, the company’s primary objective is in the development and marketing of their Flow line saddles. The saddle made its first debut at Interbike 2002.

First Impression

What differentiates the Flow from other saddles is its distinct mesh top design. Instead of using conventional foam/plastic cover, the Flow is constructed using a moulded nylon thermoplastic perimeter around a tensioned elastomeric monofilament textile. SaddleCo claims that the Flow saddle will enhance rider’s experience by providing more comfort and ventilation without weight penalty.

How It Performs

The Flow comes in two different rail choices, the cromoly and titanium. Other than the difference in the rail material and weight, both saddles are identical. For the budget conscious, the cromoly version will be a good choice as it allows you to enjoy the full benefits of the Flow without burning your pocket. Anyway, the cromoly version was what we use in this review.

We faced a minor problem when mounting the saddle. The rails of the saddle are too narrow and do not fit nicely into the groves of the seat post. Not a big problem as the rails will be forced open by the seatpost as you tighten the clamp. However, this task could be tough with some seatpost design as user got to manually force open the rails before mounting the saddle on the post. We have learnt that this is a common problem with initial batches of the Flow saddle. However, the problem was brought to SaddleCo’s attention and has been corrected.

The saddle did not feel right during the initial ride. Reviewers felt discomfort at the crotch area after riding a short distance. After some adjustments, we realised that we did not do a good job with the initial setup. What we have learnt is that, in order to achieve the optimum seating position, the rider needs to be positioned closer to the end of the saddle. For new users, if the plastic frame is causing discomfort, try to play around with to adjustment of the saddle and try to find the best position for you. Seating on the nose during long climb is almost impossible with this saddle since the whole nose comprises of hard thermoplastic.

Once the saddle is set right, the mesh provides a very good contour support, which reminds us of the hammock. The suspended feel takes the rough edge over rocky terrain and riders are able to stay seated for longer stretch during the trip. One reviewer even claims that the comfort of the Flow saddle reminded him of his titanium soft-tail. By providing better comfort, riders were able to get better mileage with less fatigue. As for SaddleCo’s claim on better ventilation, we do not really feel it. Especially not through our thick, padded tights.

The Flow also features a sleek design catered for the race breed out there. Its narrow front provides enough clearance for pedaling motion. However, we find the rear a bit too wide and tends to obstruct the rider’s movement when they need to shift their weight behind the saddle.

Conclusion

All experience riders will know that no single saddle is suitable for everybody. All of our reviewers are using narrow race saddles and has no problem when using the Flow. They love the comfort of the saddle but would prefer the rear to be sleeker. If you can, go for a spin on the saddle before purchasing. However, those that weigh beyond 200lbs need not apply, as 200lbs is the maximum weight limit of the saddle.
