On a Sunday morning like any other, a runway at Paya Lebar Air base saw a flurry of action as cyclists and inline skaters participated in the National Runway Cycling and Skating (NRWCS) event, which was jointly organized by SAFRA National Service Association and the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF). It was held for the 14th time this year; a testament to the enduring popularity of the event. As Mr Karman, who came with his family, put it, “I’ve been to this event since 1996 and it gets better every year!”

It was a rare and irresistible chance for the participants to cycle or skate down a runway that was open to the public only once a year and over 7,000 people turned up this year, with many bringing their families along. The hot sun did nothing to dampen the mood as families cycled or skated together.

After a morning of cycling and skating, participants walked around the carnival area, where there were many stalls providing different services. Pelican Pizza and Sportade drinks were among the many stalls that provided refreshments and food to the participants. The Shimano stall was kept busy the entire morning, providing bike support to the participants; helping them to check their tires and wheel alignments. Children who were bored after cycling or skating had many other distractions for them as they visited the airbrush tattoo stall or the popular Zovb Ball stall, where the kids entered a deflated Zovb ball and then the ball gets inflated. Once inflated, the children walked inside the air-filled ball.

There were also performances and demonstrations; Magnum Force from Ngee Ann Polytechnic performed cheerleading while SST BMX gave a demo of BMX stunts. To further promote family bonding, there was a Parent – Child lookalike contest as well as a Super Daddy contest, which was a talent contest of sorts. The Super Daddy contest was the crowd pleaser, with four fathers showcasing their talents and entertaining the crowd.

It was a great day to spend a Sunday; cycling or skating with your family on a runway that is only open to the public once a year. I am sure many look forward to the event next year.
