" Brake cable snapped after around 3 months! "

I changed my rear brake cable at Cheap John's (Serangoon) on 9 December 2019. Sometime in March 2020, my cable completely snapped at the point where it was secured to the rear brakes. I had been using my bike to cycle maybe 2km per day a few times a week and I estimate for only about 2 months in total as I was travelling during that period. I called Cheap John's during the Circuit Breaker period (CB) but was told that their Serangoon branch was not opened during CB. I called again during Phase 1 reopening but was informed that the Serangoon branch would still be closed indefinitely and they might not reopen the branch and rent the shop space out instead. I was told that if I wanted them to have a look at the issue, I'd have to bring my bike to their Sembawang branch which is very far for me to cycle, especially with only one operating brake. I was also told that it's likely that I would have to pay for a new cable and installation service again as it'll be considered a replacement. I argued that the cable should not have snapped after only 3 months but was told that they only guarantee products for one week and that if problems were to occur, they will occur within a week! After that, it may be due to wear and tear! I find it totally unacceptable that a new cable snaps after 3 months and they refuse to take responsibility for its quality or their standard of service. The young man who installed it was a part-timer whom I believed was still a student. He said that it's the first time he has done any kind of work on my kind of brakes - original cantilever brakes on a decades old bike. This is the first time I've experienced such bad product quality / service since I started cycling decades ago and I've always owned more than one bike at any one time. I recommend that you not consider this business if you want to get a reasonable few years out of your cable life!
