Haro, Masi Launch 2011 Bikes

CARLSBAD, CA (BRAIN)—Haro and Masi launched their 2011 bikes to the press yesterday at the Sheraton Carlsbad, as both brands had different points of emphasis to stress.

For Haro it’s back to the future, as the company looks to reintroduce its “Dare to be Different” slogan.

“For some reason we kind of went away from that mentality, and we probably should have never done that,” said Jill Hamilton (pictured), Haro’s MTB/Asphalt Bike brand manager. “While the product was looking good, it was a little boring—it was a little stale. The brand name on the downtube wasn’t really jumping out. The branding on the bikes just kind of blended into the background.”

Tour tech: Fancy footwear at the Tour de France

Next to the bikes themselves, shoes are the next important piece of equipment to the riders: they're the first point of contact with the most important part of the bike, there's often a fair bit of work put in to make them fit perfectly, and given the amount of time the riders spend strapped into them it's no wonder that it's the one piece of gear that they travel with 24/7.

Bike Sharing in Boston Gets $3 Million

OSTON, MA (BRAIN)—The Boston Bike Share Program will receive $3 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation to implement a new bike share system throughout the city.

The Regional Bike Share System is a multiple-city bike sharing system that makes thousands of bicycles available throughout the Boston metropolitan area with the swipe of a card, according to a press release. The Bike Share system was conceived as an extension and enhancement of the existing public transit system. More than 500 Bike Share stations will be located at or near MBTA bus and rail transit stations to encourage and facilitate the use of public transit. The system will create two million new bike trips per year.

Interview: Freeride pioneer Aaron Chase

Aaron Chase has done a hell of a lot to advance the sport of freeride mountain biking in its short history. Over the past decade, his ground-breaking work on the bike, bringing technical BMX tricks to big wheels, has been matched off it by his creative enthusiasm for innovative bike design and film-making.

When the sport was young, competitions were few and far between. But whenever a contest went down, the one thing you could be sure of was that Chase, also known as AC, would be on the podium.

COME 2014, cyclists will be able to traverse the busy Marina Bay area - and around the by-then-completed Gardens by the Bay - without having to dodge traffic on the roads.

Under the Land Transport Authority's (LTA) National Cycling Plan, $26 million will be set aside to build a 16km cycling network there, comprising clearly demarcated cycling paths running between pedestrian walkways and roads.

Two more towns, Changi-Simei and Bedok, will also be added to the scheme, joining five previously announced heartland districts.

Most recently, he won the Downieville Classic cross-country by over five minutes, setting a new course record and putting him on course to win the overall all-mountain victory too. “This week was an eye opener,” said Decker. “I’m starting to get used to this 29er thing.”
