The Need for Speed – “World’s fastest and most aerodynamic Aero-Tri-Road helmet”

With the Wing57, aerodynamic-wise, you’re covered.

The brand of cycling sunglasses and helmets that we have all grown to love have upped the bar with the introduction of their cutting edge Aero helmet; the Wing57.

If you are a tri-athlete or just like to ride around in an aero position on a tri-bike, the Rudy Project Wing57 will be perfect for you.

The Wing57 was born with the collaboration with John Cobb, a renowned figure in the world of cycling aerodynamics and undoubtedly, by his reputation, would have spent countless days and nights in wind tunnel (done at Pininfarina facility in Italy…think Ferrari and Lamborghini…), perfecting every millimeter of the Wing57 in to meet his stringent personal requirement. Cobb has worked with countless brand names (HED, Giro, Trek, Shimano, Cervelo, Litespeed, just to name a few) as well as overseen and addressed all things aerodynamics with cycling figures such as Greg Lemond and the now-fallen-from-grace, Lance Armstrong.

With the Wing57, aerodynamic-wise, you’re covered.

Design-wise, it looks good ….. and fast. Caught wearing it and you could be mistaken for a competitive time-trialist so be warned!  It has a shorter tail compared to other aero-helmets in the market. Supposedly, this will maximize the aerodynamics even it different wind conditions and direction. It also features a unique triple fin design at the rear, dubbed the ‘Vortex Killer’. This design specifically pulls in the airflow around the sides of the helmet through intake ports behind the ears and smoothening it, thus preventing aerodynamic-defeating turbulence. The fully integrated and removal shield will ensure maximized protection and enhanced aerodynamics while eliminating annoying glare and eye fatigue

One of the key things that really caught our attention was its supreme ventilation. The removable front visor and front vents that can be set to either open, meshed or closed. This could be a live-saver especially in our hot sunny weather of Singapore.

The Wing57 claims a weight of 300 grams for S/M size and a mere 320 grams for the L size. This is as light as the best normal road helmets out there which is quite surprising, considering that aero-centric helmets are typically heavier (since more material is used and less ‘holes’). The Wing57 fit very well on our heads incorporating comfy padding as well and fit can be adjusted via a dial retention system at the rear of the helmet.  Their ‘snug-wrap’ system wraps the flexible sides of the helmet to the rider’s head, affirming a snug and aero fit.

The Rudy Wing57 undoubtedly ranks high up with the best options available out there in the market today. Apart from it being designed to be the best aerodynamic helmet out there, it also provides supreme fit and comfort. The 2014 series come in 3 colour schemes. Budding tri-athletes and time-trialist should really give the Wing57 a good look if they are looking to shave some serious time from their personal bests.
