Langtu KR14A Review

China bicycle manufacturer Jiangmen City Ming Le Sports Equipment limited company is a big company that manufactures all sorts of bicycles for the mass market, and they currently have over eight series with something like almost a hundred models of bicycles that they manufacture in Guandong province, China.

One of their flagship folding bike models is the beautiful and well made Langtu KR14A folding bike, the brand spanking new test bike that we received was all painted and blinged out in purple colour, the frame was a very classy matt purple colour, instead of the very common shiny gloss paint jobs that the majority of bikes come with. The purple anodized aluminum alloy wheels and hubs are also purple in colour, continuing the colour accents to the handlebar grips and chainring protector as well. This bike has just the right amount of purple accents to give the bike an overall quality look.

The complete bike weighs in at a reasonable weight of 9 kg, not one of the lightest fourteen inch wheeled foldie in the market, but also not the heaviest, the weight is just manageable in case if you might ever need to fold it up to carry it for a short distance, and when folded, this bike hardly took up any space at all, and I could easily reduce the bike’s total size into a small and compact size in just three quick and easy steps, it’s just as matter of lowering the seatpost, folding the handlebar down, and then folding the entire frame into half, a very unique and superb feature of the folding mechanism is the special lock on the release handle, it’s there’s to ensure that the release handle will not accidentally undo by itself when you are cycling, a great feature that I hope to see on other folding bikes soon too.

The smaller fourteen inch wheels makes this bike ride with a bit less control the faster the speed goes up, but an advantage of the smaller wheels is that it make this bike very maneuverable, definitely capable to weaving though and around obstacles and people, even at slower speeds, the 1.75 inch tyres also help to absorb a lot of the road’s bumpiness and vibrations which would otherwise have gone straight up the thick seatpost and right into the rider’s bottom, making the ride much less comfortable, but what this bike lacks in speed, it surely makes up for in nimbleness, perfect for the daily short commute to and from the home.

You won’t be finding any shifters on this bike as this is a single speed bike, but the smaller fourteen inch wheels which have been matched by a 42 tooth crank with an 11 tooth rear hub makes this a very easy and comfortable bike to ride, and the gearing ratio is spot on, more than capable of going from short leisurely rides to being able to take on the occasional climb up a gentle slope.

Retailing at $558, it’s certainly going to give you the bling for your buck, with a good ride feel to boot.
