Recently got hold of the Cateye Velo1 sample. Although it is not entirely the latest cyclocomputer in the market, the Velo 1 is the lower end model of cateye products priced only at a modest amount, but still provides the basic essentials of what good cyclocomputers should have.

Setup was pretty easy and fuss-free. It took me less that 20 mins to read the manual and complete the installation. The documentation is clear and well presented.

The sensor (mounted on the fork) has a temporary sticky tape so that you can re-adjust your sensor position to suit your magnet, which is fastened on the spokes of the wheel. Once that is done properly, you can fasten the sensor with 2 x Nylon ties (which came with the Velo 1).

Wheel circumference setting was a breeze as the installation manual provides a cross-reference table. My wheel is a 26 x 2.00. So that means a 206 L(cm) on the computer. Tire size is marked on both sides of the tire.

Features Strength/weakness
The cyclocomputer has a tough casing and a good clear display window. A single large scroll button that allows you to toggle between functions in a sequential manner. The button is ergonomically designed. Situated at the buttom right end of the computer (refer to picture) to suit the cyclist while riding. However, I did find the button at times, unresponsive. It doesn’t have the resounding “click” feel.

Bottom line is, the CATEYE VELO1 is a great value for money buy if you are just looking for a easy to use, durable and light weight (for those weight savers) cyclocomputer. It is easy to set up and doesn’t buldge on the handlebar. The auto start/stop feature is a plus too. However, if you into more serious biking or you are a night rider, try the CATEYE MITY3 instead.
