Getting on the race with Skratch Labs

Skratch Labs is touted as ‘Natural Hydration and Nutrition’ that is easy on the tastebuds and even easier on the stomach. Would it work? Well, I had my virgin taste of it under race conditions while racing the recent Singapore Mountain Bike Carnival with my girlfriend, Jiehui. The format of the race requires one rider in our team (of two) to be out on course at any one time, clocking laps in relay for the full duration of the race; the team with the most laps wins.

Skratch turned out to be a real treat to gulp down at race-pace, and easily too – this was the “Lemons + Limes” Exercise Hydration Mix, which I scooped from a 16oz bag (enough for 20 500ml servings). It delivered a mild-taste that did not clash with the other foods I was also trying to stuff into my mouth in-between laps. Sweet enough to encourage me to keep taking on-board fluids and keep any problems with dehydration and cramping at bay. Jiehui and I handily won the top spot for

Next up was racing in the Singapore Bike Festival and the MTB Nationals. Great consistency of flavour, and I only had to rely on single bottles at a time in each case – along with a 2nd place and 4th place finish respectively. The true test, however, would be to take a bottle of Skratch on the Ace Adventure Challenge adventure race.

Not only did the Skratch go down very well; I wished I had packed more of it so I could mix more drink during the race! A hot and brutal course that sees so much running – with a loaded pack – and unpredictability of disciplines was good to prove to myself the efficacy of Skratch, plus its compatibility with other solid race nutrition and ‘real foods’ that are the norm for adventure races. Gladly, our team clinched 2nd spot too – thanks to the Skratch in my bottle, my stomach was pretty happy too at the finish line, despite most of my other body parts being comparatively sore and fatigued!
