Topic: Happy Birthday to Bicycles!

12th June 2017 marks the 200th anniversary of bicycles. German Baron Karl Freiherr von Drais took a ride with his own creation on 12 June 1817 and started the trend of modern bicycles.

Karl Drais's wooden bike went at an average speed of 15km/h, faster than horse-drawn post coach could at that time. Many benefited from Karl as the rising prices of fuel and oats used to feed horses was becoming unaffordable.

As the roads in the past were not flat, many cyclists started to share the sidewalks with pedestrains. Bicycle bans became common to protect the safety of pedestrains.
Bicycles also influeced women fashion, causing them to develop "common sense" clothing to avoid exposing their legs.

As bicycle goes through more changes to meet our modern needs, let us take some time to appreciate how this invention has helped us, one way or another.

Happy 200th birthday!

Be sure to get your bike some new bar tape or something nice to celebrate!  Buy your bike a beer.
